Armstrong is mainly rural community with many farms and dairy cattle. Its name is derived from the Shuswap language, a word that has multiple meanings as, “flat meadow”, “prairie-banked river”, “meeting of the waters”, and “beautiful valley”.
Dutch immigrants settled in the Okanagan – Armstrong valley after the World War II. They brought with them their cheese-making knowledge, creating the world renowned Armstrong cheese brand. Armstrong’s history can be seen in its museum.
